The Mens' 1sts had a hugely enjoyable trip to Cork this weekend where they faced C of I in the Irish Senior Cup. Although our hosts ran out 6-1 winners the scoreline probably doesn't fairly reflect the course of the game.
Boasting two current Irish internationals, CI got off to a perfect start, scoring inside 60secs when 'tarf failed to clear the ball after a long John Jermyn aerial. Their second came not long after but was itself followed by a period of sustained pressure from the Bulls. Lenno had the ball in the net from a short corner rebound but unluckily the whistle had gone less than a second before he put it in.....like. (hey, we were in Cork....boy)
; )
The first 35mins yielded a further 3 or 4 corners to the Bulls and while we went very close the ball just wasn't going in. We hit the post and crossbar during the game which was played at an extremley high pace and standard. In fairness to the 'tarf the only thing missing all day was goals but while we had to push on and chase the game we conceded 3 on the break in the second half.
The spirits weren't dampened however as the lads showed just how well we can play, and we deservedly got a consolation goal as Rob Abbott poached one off Kellier after some great skill in the D by our Power City man.
A fines meeting followed the game and much booze was consumed but i'm cutting this part short as i can't remember much. Bobbo somehow convinced his mum to let him stay down and borrowed Ben's i.d. to help him get refused entry to whichever nightclub we went to.
Thanks to Harrold and Bobbo for going to Tesco on Friday night and cooking the food (along with Lazy and myself) and cheers to all the lads for a cracking weekend - having never stayed in a hostel before Poynter was very excited bless him!(anyone know where the jerseys ended up?)
Despite having a very tough season results wise this year, we showed this week just how well we are playing from last year, and we saw how enjoyable it is to play at this standard. We'd probably beat the '08-'09 team by 5 or 6 if we could play ourselves!
6 league games left to ensure survival in Div 1 - if we bring this level we're in with a shout!
