The 2s travelled out to Monkstown last Saturday in need of a much needed win playing against a Monkstown team we had yet to beat over the past seasons. However with a strong squad out, the squad were confident of getting something out of the game.
This confidence was increased further when it was realised that Monkstown had failed to turn up with a goalkeeper although we seemed to forget how difficult our strikers find it to put it into an empty goal! Within a minute of the start a turnover high up the pitch led to Maxy passing to Seán, who’s dummy brought the ball to Matty who carried into the empty goal. For the next 25 minutes we then discovered how difficult it is to play against 11 outfielders as we ran round in circles trying to win the ball back. Monkstown then finally found a goalkeeper and duly equalised. However on the stroke of half time GB carried the ball on the baseline and somehow squeezed the ball past the goalkeeper from the endline.
Elliot gave a pretty calm team talk (fairly rare), apart from an individual pop at me (fairly common), and we went out from half time looking to increase our lead. We did so in style with a flowing Guardiola esque passing move which led to GB squaring for Simon to score, great link up from RB to LB! Monkstown pulled another back but we moved clear soon after with a rapid 3 goals. Matty first banged in a reverse on the counter, Seán half volleyed in another from a corner rebound and GB dragged in a sixth. The game looked safe but just to make things interesting for the home supporters we generously decided to concede 2 goals in a minute. However we held on for a vital win, scoring one goal into an empty net and 5 past a goalkeeper…. and another step towards escaping relegation!
